Title: The Matchmaker
Genre: Action/Adventure, Humor, Hurt/Comfort, Medium Fic
Other Characters: Connor MacLeod, Joe Dawson...
Prequel/Companion piece/Sequel: The Hunt [link
Summary: Connor arrives at Seacouver on a call from Duncan, but finds out that his kinsman is nowhere to be seen. Connor decides to question Joe his watcher and meets Adam. Worried they all depart to Duncan's last destination to discover what happened...
Settings ==> It is slowly told but perfectly mixed with the story itself making it easy to read, interesting to discover and curious to know more. It takes place after the end of the series, and as said, we learn about the past little by little with it staying relatively not detailed but still coherent and strong.
Characters ==> The narrator happens to be Connor and I have to admit that I don't possess an exhaustive knowledge of him even with the movies but the overall impression is consistent. His character seems to exist by himself and possesses his own personal identity which is different from the impression we get from Methos or from Duncan or even at a lower level, from Joe. The distance taken towards our usual heroes by this change of perspective brings something fresh, something interesting and I guess also really charming. Methos then appears more canon as we don't have the opportunity to read his mind like in the series, and Duncan's reactions really suit him.
Plot ==> Not so usual, we can see here that the plot brings the story out, giving it its overall dimension rather than in most of the fics, where the plot is secondary and dulled by the angst or the romance. It is constructed at first as an investigation, a mystery to resolve... to quickly become a rescue operation... So in the beginning, we kind of have this feeling of freedom where anything could happen. But as the story moves, we are too soon trapped into a linear plot. Nonetheless the story does keep its appeal and remains a delight to read.
Style ==> Seeing the events through the eyes of Connor or in another words, having one unique third person perspective brings a really different approach of this kind of story, which I have to compliment the author for. The result is an objective perspective that the author really manages to convey with a light tone. The style by itself is pretty simple and serves the story well.
Interest ==> It is refreshing to read a Connor view upon our heroes which we never had the chance to see in the series or movies. Happily surprising, in fact, because when Connor appears in DM/M fics, it is always very briefly and as an anecdote to the real romance or whatever. But here, he really exists and gives his opinion quite credibly for once.
In conclusion ==> A quite good, sweet, fresh treat you can indulge on. The plot gives a lot of promise which it doesn't entirely satisfy but still, this fic worths your time.
17/01/2017 : Seventh Dimension Archive has been shut for a couple of years already, sadly. Following a request, I have shared the Matchmaker and its sequel The Hunt as a text file on my Google Drive.
